Energy and Innovative Industrial and Environmental Technologies

Objective

The curriculum named “Energy and Innovative Industrial and Environmental Technologies” addresses to potential PhD students interested in energy conversion, distribution and utilization technologies. Specific attention is paid to all renewable energy sources and to the enhancement of energy conversion efficiency.

Obviously, any research in the energy arena cannot leave aside the environmental effects of the implemented technologies. Low impact technologies must be always preferred. Every single process must be optimized in detail combining environmental and economic aspects. This requires a relentless, sensible and multidisciplinary approach. Contrasting needs have to be taken in account and sustainable compromises must be found.

Specific research fields

  • exploitation of renewable energy sources, with special emphasis on geothermal, wind and solar energy.
  • optimization of energy usage in industrial and residential applications, accounting for environmental as well as economic implications.
  • numerical and experimental analysis of machinery (gas turbines, centrifugal, axial and reciprocating compressors, internal combustion engines) with special emphasis on flow optimization, cooling of high temperature components, low emission combustion and use of alternative fuels.
  • refrigeration technologies in general, from HVAC to low temperature applications such as industrial or medical. Again, much effort is devoted to environmental impact of refrigeration technologies, e.g. selection of low-impact refrigerants, as well as energy efficiency enhancement.
