Complementary skills

  • The University of Florence realized, after a year of experimentation, a training of Complementary Skills dedicated to the Doctoral Students in order to answer to the increasing request, in the field of scientific research and on a highly specialized job market, of technical and relational skills (teaching, linguistics, statistics, IT, legislation, etc.). From the XXXIV cycle, students must acquire at least 6 ECTS (or 36 hours total over the three-year period) for participating to these courses. The offer is varied and articulated: individual modules and cycles of lessons.

  • The CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo) organises English language courses and scientific communication courses in the main languages of exchange (French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, English). Each language course is worth 2 ECTS credits and requires a request from your tutor indicating that it is necessary for the purposes of your PhD to acquire a level of knowledge of the foreign language (or Italian for foreigners) higher than that possessed by the PhD student (with the exception of the presentation course). It should be noted that the awarding of 2 credits for any language course, made at the request of the tutor who indicates the need to acquire a level of knowledge of the foreign language (or Italian for foreigners), can only be made once during the three-year period. It should be noted that, in general, language courses, including those taken outside the University, may still be recognised for the purposes of achieving the 6 compulsory credits, for a maximum of 2 credits.

  • In addition, the CLA organises a specific course reserved for lecturers, PhD students and researchers at the University of Florence who wish to develop their ability to give presentations at conferences in English. At the end of the course, the certificate must be sent to the PhD office: dottorato@unifi.it. For further information, please contact Benedetta Rizzo.

  • Courses that award Complementary Skills may also be organised as part of the internal training programme of the Doctoral Course in Industrial Engineering.

The choice on the activities can be adapted for any students’ specific formation.

Doctoral students can check the Transversal Skills obtained through courses organised by the University (not CLA courses, only the Presentations course) by consulting the registers sent by email.
