The talk will focus on Robotic Flexible Endoscopy and the level of computer assistance required to minimize the mental burden on the operator. Flexible endoscopy enables clinicians to reach deep inside the human body to diagnose and treat mortal diseases, such as cancer. Unfortunately, conventional flexible endoscopes are difficult to operate, often traumatic for the patient, extremely expansive, and prone to the risk of viral and bacterial crosscontamination.

Modern combat aircraft design requirements impose the adoption of weapons bays to reduce radar signature and aerodynamic drag at transonic/supersonic speeds. Nevertheless, upon opening the bay, to release the store, aerodynamics and acoustic issues are generated which may potentially damage the structure of the cavity and the gimbal/sensors of the ordnance. Additionally, the trajectory of the store is strongly coupled to the unsteadiness of the aerodynamic field posing a hazard to a safe separation. Successful designs have been employed in current, low-signature, combat aircraft generation (F22, F117, F35, B2, J20, Su57), though each new design requires detailed studies to optimise the final architecture. The fundamentals of weapons bays aerodynamics and acoustic will be discussed. Attendees will learn to identify the major issues characterising the topic, and what are the main difficulties during store release procedures. Numerical and experimental approaches for design procedures will be discussed as well.

This course provides an introduction to practical deep learning using MATLAB. The general goal of the course is giving some intuition of neural networks’ mechanism in some different fields. In the first part of the course, students will learn to build convolutional neural networks (CNNs) from scratch; they also understand how information is passed between network layers and how different types of layers work. In the second part, they gain insight into the concept of automatic differentiation. Given first-order derivative information, some stochastic gradient-based optimization methods are introduced for training CNNs. Using Deep Learning Toolbox of MATLAB, students are expected to know how to create some convolutional neural networks, how to train them with suitable stochastic optimization methods, and how to evaluate their performance for classification, and regression tasks.

You are carrying on your PhD programme with sweat, tears and blood and, taking a breath from your hard work, sometimes you ask yourself what does it will be of your career? Or you just completed your doctorate and you are gasping, seeking for a job whatever and wherever it will be? Well, welcome to the early career scientist (ERC) club. Over the last two decades being a researcher has become harder and harder in terms of competition. So, apart having an outstanding research record, what can one do to survive this bloodbath? This short course is a guide to endure in today’s cut-throat world, planning your path, designing your skills, juggling between job and grant applications. In this short course you will gain more insight into how you can plan your path and what skills you need for this. You will know how to define your overarching research niche that broadens your appeal for both grants and research positions. In addition, you will gain tips and tricks on networking while staying close to yourself, and you will learn about the pros and cons of moving away from the country you are currently working in. This seminar is particularly targeted for PhD students and, more in general, for early career researchers in their immediately post-doctorate stage. It could be also very interesting, however, for senior researchers who are interested in best mentoring and assisting ECRs

Introduction to Combat Aircraft Stealth Technology

0,5 Dr. David Bacci 23/04/2024 14-17 3h 043 SM All

Marconcini

Modern combat aircraft design is governed by signature reduction requirements, both in the electromagnetic and infrared spectra. At present it is commonly accepted to sacrifice other aspects of the design, such as aerodynamic and propulsion performance, to achieve low observability. In this seminar, the concept of signature reduction/control applied to combat aircraft will be discussed. The basics of radar and infrared signature requirements (applied to aircraft), and their effect on final airframe shape will be analysed, considering the relative importance for current and future projects.

X-ray μ-CT (micro-computed tomography) is a non-destructive (i.e. without cutting the sample) X-ray imaging technique which provide the internal picture of a 3D object. This analytical technique spans a wide range of applications; it can be used, for example, in the study of advanced materials (to determine, for example, volume fractions, pore size distribution, distance measurements), in food industry (to investigate the effectiveness of drying), in electronics (for studying phones, batteries, chips, boards and similar electronic samples); when large and dense samples need to be scanned case high power and larger μ-CT are typically used. In this 6-hour course an introduction to the μ-CT theory will be provided (during the first 2-hour lesson), than during the second lesson, a sample will undergo μ-CT analysis (its μ-CT data will be collected and will be used to reconstruct its 3D image and to investigate its inner structure) PhD students interested in attending the course should contact Prof. Rossi (p.rossi@unifi.it) before 20th April 2024

Additionally, fundamental characterization techniques such as electron scanning microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) will be briefly introduced.

This part will cover the theory of depth-sensing indentation techniques to extract the mechanical properties of materials. Starting from the "standard" Oliver-Pharr method to calculate hardness and elastic modulus of materials, the course will also cover more advanced methods: "sinus-mode" indentations under constant load (to extract storage and loss modulus) or increasing load (to characterize hardness and modulus as a continuous function of penetration depth); continuous spherical indentation to extract stress-strain curves from small-scale samples. Application examples as well as general indications on proper ways to perform the tests will also be provided.
