Sustainability is crucial for humanity, and engineering sustainability is an important contributor to overall sustainability and sustainable development. This is due to the pervasiveness of engineering and its importance in economic development and living standards, and the environmental impacts of engineering. But engineering sustainability is complex and challenging. Many factors that need to be considered and appropriately addressed in moving towards engineering sustainability are examined in this presentation. These include appropriate selection of resources, use of sustainable processes, enhancement of the efficiency, environmental stewardship and others.

Through hydrogen energy systems, the energy carrier hydrogen is a key facilitator of sustainable energy and can contribute significantly to attaining sustainability and sustainable development. As easily accessible fossil fuel supplies become increasingly scarce and environmental concerns escalate, hydrogen energy is likely to become an increasingly important. In this presentation, the role of hydrogen as an energy carrier and facilitator of sustainable energy is described and illustrated, and hydrogen energy systems that can contribute to a sustainable world are reviewed and discussed. Topics covered include routes to hydrogen production from various energy sources, both renewable and non-renewable, and technologies for the storage, transport, distribution and utilization of hydrogen, especially in the transportation and energy utility sectors.

Large-scale machine learning problems are nowadays pervasive in computer science and engineering, with applications ranging from perceptual tasks such as image or speech recognition to the parametric design of industrial products. The process of “learning a task” involves “training” a data-driven model that predicts the unknown outcome based on the available data on the application of interest. Artificial Neural Networks are among the most popular and employed models for predictive tasks in machine learning. In this course, we present and discuss gradient-based optimization methods for solving finite-sum minimization problems arising in machine learning applications. The methods analysed employ first-order models for the objective function and stochastic gradient approximations based on subsampling. The application of such methods on Neural and Convolutional Neural Networks will be considered and numerical results will be performed and discussed.

The use of Assertion Evidence approach for Technical Presentations 0,5

The assertion-evidence approach calls on you to build your talks on messages, not topics. In this approach, you start with an assertion covering the point of the current portion of the talk and then support those messages with visual evidence, not bulleted lists. Although requiring more up front effort, this assertion-evidence approach leads to higher understanding by the audience, as evidenced by tests of audience comprehension as well as psychology researchers. In addition, students claim that using the assertion-evidence approach helps them project more confidence because they show ownership of the content through explaining visual evidence.
